Every year supplemental funding for many different Arizona programs, including DDD, is approved without much notice or attention. Regardless of who is in office, democrats or republicans, this has been a bi-partisan, non-partisan issue for years.
This year is different. This year the Republican led Appropriations Committee refused to approve the funding, saying the Democratic governor has mismanaged funds. It is not the purpose of this page to debate the legitimacy of this claim. The purpose of this page is to say that regardless of the reason, it's the job of the state government to make sure that it's financial obligations are met and that the 60,000 people in Arizona who utilize services funded through DDD do not go without critical care that has already been deemed medically necessary.
Why this year is different is up for debate. Could it be because next year is an election year and this issue is being used to make the "other side" look bad? Possibly. We don't know why this is happening for sure. But it is happening and there are horrible consequences already taking shape as listed below.
